Efficient has been cleared to start in Saturday’s Group One Sydney Cup at Randwick.
The eight-year-old underwent a veterinary examination on Friday morning and was passed fit to take his place in the 3200m staying feature by Racing NSW’s senior veterinarian Dr Craig Suann.
The 2007 Melbourne Cup winner was a late scratching from the Group Two Chairman’s Quality (2600m) two weeks ago after vets determined he was lame in the off-foreleg following a race day inspection.
Racing NSW chairman of stewards Ray Murrihy arranged for Efficient to be inspected on Friday ahead of the Sydney Cup.
“No abnormalities were detected by Dr Suann and Efficient has been deemed suitable to take his place in the Sydney Cup tomorrow,” a Racing NSW statement said.
Efficient will be ridden by Michael Rodd who combines with the gelding for the first time since winning the 2007 Melbourne Cup on him.
Rodd also won the 2006 Victoria Derby on Efficient.
Efficient was at $15 with TAB Sportsbet on Friday with Permit the $3.40 favourite.
